Robotics General Meeting

Today's Robotics meeting focused on the LEGO competition and finding small businesses. Some complications came up today. It turns out that some of our members have chem-lab that day. We all have very busy schedules at The Preuss School and it's quite amazing that we can be in a club like FIRST Robotics that requires such a huge amount of dedication. For example, I have been staying after school EVERYDAY because I have have UCSD class Mon, Wed, Fri and then I have Robotics/LEGO on Tues and Thur. Problems like the chem-lab tends to come up now and then and it teaches us how to prioritize and use time management.

Anyways, today proved that Pre-Planning has the most work to do (self-reminder: manuals & brochure). Also, the showing today was quite dissappointing. There weren't even enough members to fill up the LEGO-jobs sheet. Generally, people start showing up again around build-season, but the pre-season is also very important.

LEGO planning update

The LEGO planning meetings are on EVERY Tuesdays afterschool now. I know you all get hungry and tired staying after school, but the competition is less then a month away! Please work hard! The effort will definitely pay off on the day of the competition.

So last Tuesday we worked on the trophies and judges. I will be checking out some trophy stores this weekend. As for judges, we got 5, including our own mentor, Mainieri. We have no referees right now, but I have no worries about that because we could just ask some UCSD mentors from Preuss to be refs. PRE-PLANNING HAS TO START THE JUDGES AND REFEREES NOTEBOOKS! This should be easy since we have all the score sheets from last years and we have the rules already update.

I feel like I'm forgetting something really really important regarding the competition...and I think I'll regret it later. Oh well.

After the competition, I will start working on the website again.

General robotics meeting

Some important highlight's of today's general meeting was: 1) go ice-skating and bring your friends to support robotics, 2) we need to raise $$$$6,000 and we only have a little of $250 right now, 3) we will be coordinating volunteering events soon!

I showed everyone the blog and the website, which reminds me that I have to update the website right now. We also broke into groups. In my fundraising group, I told my group members the fundraising approach we are taking this year --> small companies! Since Preuss students come from all over San Diego, we should have a good range of businesses we can talk to.

**SPECIAL NOTE: Lego planning will now be done on Tuesdays. I'm sorry for not having been going to Monday meetings due to scheduling difficulties! I will be staying afterschool ALL Tuesdays to help.

Robo Expo

Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, I went to the Robo Expo hosted in Balboa Park. The expo was for all types of engineering type organizations/institutes around San Diego county to display their information to the general public. Preuss Robotics had a booth there and the other members and I presented to people who stopped by. By going to events like these, Preuss Robotics hopes to spread the message of FIRST and get more FIRST teams in our area. Members that attend also gain speaking skills.
